To the west of Newquay

Crantock (3 miles)

Wide beach with sand dunes between Newquay and West Pentire. Turn left at Quintrell Downs and take A3075 coast road, then turn right just after Newquay. Keep going through Crantock village until you get to the National Trust car park by the beach. Excellent surfing. Wetsuits and surfboards available for hire.

Holywell Bay (4 miles)

Nice family beach with sand dunes. Fun Park with Crazy Golf, Go Carts, Panning for Gold etc Tel: 01637 830095

Polyjoke Beach (3 1/2 miles)

Small cove with sandy beach between Crantock and Holywell Bay. Park at West Pentire and walk down. There is a wind up gramophone shop located by the car park with a fine collection of old gramophones from 1900 to 1940 for sale together with records. Contact John Sleep 01637 830 415

Perranporth (11 miles)

Seaside town with lots of shops and large sandy beach. Airfield nearby.


To the East of Newquay

Lusty Glaze Beach Newquay, TR7 3AE (2 miles)

Adventure centre with surfing, abseiling, rock climbing, zip wire, cliff activities and massage. Beachside restaurant and bar.

Watergate Bay (5 miles)

Home of the Extreme Sports Academy which teaches surfing and para-gliding. There are trampolines with bungee jumps, various restaurants and shops selling clothes, wetsuits and surfboards etc. Polo on the beach now an annual event,

Porth Beach, TR7 3NH (4.5 miles), and Mawgan Porth (8miles towards Padstowe)

both beautiful and most enjoyable


South Coast

Polkerris (18 miles)

Small village with nice pub, the Rashleigh Inn next to beach which is sheltered by harbour wall. Beautiful coastal walk to Fowey via Polridmouth (pronounced Pridmouth) which features in Daphne du Maurier’s book Rebecca. Polridmouth can also be accessed by road. Park in field at Menabilly Barton and walk last 1/2 mile to beach.



Dairyland (200 yards)

Swings, slides, indoor play gym (opposite Tresillian). Much appreciated by children of all ages.

Trerice (1 mile)

an Elizabethan manor house belonging to National Trust with fine interiors and garden. Open every day except Saturdays. Walk down lane beyond barns next to tennis court and keep going past Trevarthian Farm (dog will bark at you, but Mark the owner is friendly) and turn left at road to Trerice which is 200 yards on right.

Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum (10 miles), Carthew, St Austell PL26 8XG

A collection of Victorian mining equipment and a functioning water pumping station with view into a working clay pit.

Royal Cornwall Museum (12 miles), River Street, Truro,TR1 2SJ – Display of objects from Cornwall’s past from prehistoric times to present day including a fine collection of minerals, an Egyptian mummy and some excellent Cornish paintings,

Millennium project with three large biomes in a clay pit full of trees and plants from tropical rain forests and Africa. Worth visiting on a rainy day.

Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre (15 miles)

Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey, PL26 6EN (17 miles)

One of the most popular botanical gardens in the UK with restored Victorian walled garden and beautiful mature shrubs. Mevagissey is a pretty seaside town with ferry to Fowey.

National Trust house with beautiful gardens, glorious coastal views, and a range of excellent trees to climb.

Camel Valley vineyard, near Bodmin, PL30 5LG (18 miles)

Lanhydrock (21 miles) Bodmin, PL30 5AD

A substantial National Trust Property dating back to Elisabethan times, extensively rebuilt fine Victorian kitchens. Take A30 to Bodmin then A38 towards Liskeard and immediately right at roundabout to Lanhydrock.

Fowey (22 miles)
